Nel 2000, è iniziato un processo educativo che ha portato a una rivoluzione culturale, educativa e sanitaria nel campo della malattia ossea neoplastica e alla creazione di una nuova disciplina, l’osteoncologia, così chiamata perché si concentra sui tumori ossei primari e metastatici e anche sulla salute delle ossa durante il trattamento antitumorale. Gli obbiettivi principali del progetto di osteoncologia sono quelli di promuovere la creazione di centri multidisciplinari di osteoncologia per diagnosi, terapia e riabilitazione della malattia ossea legata al cancro e anche per svolgere attività di ricerca in questo settore. Programmi di istruzione multidisciplinari teorico-pratici, compresi quelli a livello universitario, sono stati organizzati sia in Italia sia all'estero per la formazione di medici (osteoncologi) e di altri operatori sanitari in questa nuova disciplina. Sebbene le informazioni sulla malattia ossea neoplastica abbondino in letteratura, queste tendono a limitarsi ad articoli che si occupano di determinate malattie e discipline specifiche. È stato così deciso di mettere tutte queste informazioni in un testo, al fine di fornire una guida completa di riferimento (cura, ricerca, formazione) per medici osteoncologi.
